This guide explains how to configure dependent questions within Ciphr iRecruit application forms so that follow-up questions only become mandatory when a candidate provides a specific answer to a previous question. This helps create a more streamlined and relevant application experience for candidates.
Steps to configure conditional mandatory questions
- Log in to the iRecruit Admin Portal
- Navigate to Company Name > Forms > Variables
- Locate and open the variable (question) that will act as the trigger question
- Scroll down to the Select Rules section
- Create a new rule and, within the Select Type dropdown, choose:
- Related application form question is mandatory
- Select the follow-up question that you would like to become mandatory
- Enter the trigger response in the Comparison Value field
Example
If the trigger question has Yes/No answer options and you want a follow-up question to become mandatory only when the candidate selects Yes:
- Select Type: Related application form question is mandatory
- Related Question: Select the follow-up question
- Comparison Value: Yes
In this example, the follow-up question will only be mandatory when the candidate answers Yes to the trigger question. If they answer No, the follow-up question will remain optional.

Expected outcome
Once configured, candidates will only be required to complete the dependent question when their response meets the criteria specified in the rule, resulting in a cleaner and more user-friendly application process.
