Introduction
The Disability Confident scheme is a UK government initiative designed to encourage employers to recruit and retain disabled people and those with health conditions. It provides a framework for employers to challenge attitudes, increase understanding, and remove barriers for disabled individuals in the workplace.
The scheme is voluntary and has three levels:
- Disability Confident Committed (Level 1)
- Disability Confident Employer (Level 2)
- Disability Confident Leader (Level 3)
As employers progress through the levels, they commit to inclusive and accessible recruitment practices, offering interviews to disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria, and supporting existing employees who acquire a disability or long-term health condition.
Participation in the scheme not only helps organisations demonstrate their commitment to equality and diversity but also enables them to access a wider talent pool and improve workplace culture. By being Disability Confident, employers send a clear signal to staff, clients, and potential recruits that they are serious about inclusion and are actively working to support disabled people to thrive in the workplace. The scheme plays an important role in helping to close the disability employment gap and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
iRecruit allows applicants to indicate if they wish to apply under the Disability Confident Scheme. As part of this process, the system can also collect information on any reasonable adjustments the applicant may require, both for the interview stage and potential employment.
As a recruiter, it’s important to easily identify applicants who have applied under this scheme so that appropriate arrangements can be made in advance. iRecruit supports this by displaying an icon next to the applicant’s record, clearly indicating their participation in the Disability Confident Scheme.
This feature ensures that recruiters can proactively manage and support applicants who may require adjustments, in line with inclusive recruitment best practices.
Application
As part of the application form that the applicant will complete via the iRecruit Candidate Portal there will be a specific section relating to the Disability Confident Scheme, with explanatory header text including a link for further information.
Please see example below:
This section would typically include the three questions below:
- Do you wish to apply under the Disability Confident scheme?
- Do you require any reasonable adjustments if invited to an interview?
- If yes, please provide details of the adjustments you require
Recruiters Portal
When an application is received where the applicant has selected ‘Yes’ in response to the question “Do you wish to apply under the Disability Confident scheme?”, a Disability Confident icon will be displayed against their applicant record within the Recruiters Portal.
This allows recruiters to easily identify applicants who have applied under the Disability Confident scheme, helping ensure they are considered in line with the scheme’s commitments.
