Query
- "Different manager for one person in a shared job"
- "Changing the manager affects everyone in the job"
- "How do I give one employee a different manager from others in the same job?"
- "Employee reports to a different manager from the rest of the same role"
Answer
Managers are set on the job, not the person, so everyone in a shared (multi-occupancy) job reports to the same manager. To give one employee a different manager, create a separate job for them, set its manager, then move the employee onto it. For a unique reporting line, both the employee and the manager need to be in single-occupancy jobs.
How to fix it
- Go to Job, Pay & Reward > Job and Pay Configuration > Jobs, and create a new job for the employee. Use a unique Job Number. See Jobs - Viewing and creating Jobs.
- Open the new job and select the Hierarchy tab.
- Click Change Manager, choose the manager's job, then click Yes to confirm. See Job hierarchy - viewing and changing a manager.
- Go to the employee's Job and Pay record and use the magnifying glass to select the new job. See Viewing and creating Job and Pay records.
| ⚠ Important: this relies on reporting lines coming from the Jobs file. Check that Use Job File? is enabled in System Settings, as this is the recommended configuration and features such as the org chart depend on it. |
