What are legacy notifications?
Firstly, you don't need to do anything. When Self-serve Notifications are switched on for your system, all your existing notifications are moved into it automatically and keep running exactly as before.
For the first time, you can see every notification set up in your system in one place, without keeping a separate record. Notifications that Ciphr set up for you before the move are shown as legacy notifications. This includes any that were configured but still disabled or in test. They keep the status they had before the move, so live notifications stay live.
How to spot a legacy notification
- In Employee Communications > Manage Notifications, legacy notifications have a Legacy tag on the summary page
- When you open one, a legacy notification banner shows at the top of the page
| Note: To Manage Notifications you need a system administrator licence and access to the page in Role Management. |
What's different about legacy notifications
Legacy notifications were built with our previous notification engine, so they work differently from new notifications.
- Send time: they send at the same time of day as before, and you can't change it
- Branding: they look the same as they do today. They don't pick up changes to your logo or branding. Only new notifications use your current branding
- Status: you set Disabled, Test or Live on the notification itself
- Preview: you can preview each version of the email, but not with a sample employee's details
- History: View history shows who changed the notification and when, but not what they changed. You can't restore an earlier version
- Send log: View send log shows the emails sent. A record of each email is also still saved against the employee in Additional Information Notifications category, as before

Do I need to do anything with my legacy notifications?
No, you don’t need to do anything. Your existing notifications will continue to work as they do today, with no action required.
- If your legacy notifications work as you want: you don't need to do anything. They'll keep running
- If you need to change the audience, schedule, filters or send time, or update the branding: we recommend recreating it as a new notification. New notifications give you full control and include version history. See How to move a legacy HR notification to a new notification
- If you only need a small change to the wording or recipients: see Making small changes to a legacy HR notification
You can do this whenever it suits you; there's no deadline.
